A lesson in context.

Read the following quote :

“What we’re trying to do here is strike a blow at the heart of the scalping operation. The scalpers and their profits serve no one but the scalpers.”

That sounds pretty ominous, don’t it. I read this, and was thinking maybe something to do with animal hunting, maybe apes, or elephants or bears or something. It doesn’t sound like a pleasant business at all.

Then I scrolled down, and got the entire quote:

“What we’re trying to do here is strike a blow at the heart of the scalping operation. The scalpers and their profits serve no one but the scalpers. Those monies belong to the people who created the show, pure and simple.”

ROCCO LANDESMAN,president of Jujamcyn Theaters, on plans to charge $480 for some tickets to “The Producers.”

Which just goes to show how important it is to remember the context of any quote. Much of the quotes we read in the media are incomplete, edited to suit the writer’s needs, as opposed to the original intended meaning of the speaker.

Incidentally, this also comes from the NY times.
