The Great War: Take 2?

“If we have to go to war, jolly good.”

GENERAL S. PADMANABHAN,India’s army chief.

I remember reading that leading up to World War 1, the various governments recruited by intimating that the war would be quick, fun – perhaps a charming exercise to avoid boredom. The Great War was to be a quick war, not a horrific, pointless exercise in slaughter and terror. This cavalier attitude towards war by the military always surprises me. You’d think that those actually involved with the decisions that send people to die would be the least willing to do so.
