Fuckin’ Netscape!

So tomorrow, or Thursday, or sometime imminent, the SFU Annual Report 2001 website will launch. I believe that there is to be full page ads in papers, etc. So a big do. On Monday morning, the site was testing fine in Netscape 4+, IE 4+ and Opera 4+ (AOL and WebTV users can fuck off). Then I made some edits to make it work in Netscape 3, and added a couple new features. Tonight, at 6:30, I read an email letting me know that the site explodes in Netscape 4.X. So I start to work. I finish about 10 minutes ago, and spent all this time, minus an hour for Buffy, doing these fixes. Lessons learned and re-learned?
1. Again, as I posted a long time ago, Netscape doesn’t like underscores.
2. Netscape places an image in the middle of a line-height attribute, padding the image.
3. Netscape cannot inherit from more than one layer up. This means that nested layers do not inherit any styles defined outside of their parent. Like a stylesheet included using a link tag, for instance.
4. Netscape not only reads whitespace between tags that it shouldn’t, it appears to read whitespace WITHIN tags that it shouldn’t. Img tags with a trailing space before the > seemed to create a space. Eeeeevil.
5. What Netscape will do changes drastically from version to version.

So now I go bed.

  1. A cursory inspection reveals that this site is now completely unreadable in netscape. I’ll redesign soon so that it starts to break gracefully again, promise.
