Today is International Workers Day.
I feel lucky to be working somewhere where I am treated with respect for my intelligence, experience and safety. Whilst, like most, I would like to be paid more, I am paid a decent wage and am not expected to be here at all hours, unusual in this industry. My coworkers are also good people, skilled at what they do and fun to be around, although I find their preoccupation with haute cuisine somewhat odd sometimes :).
My thoughts today are with all those who’re not so lucky with where they work, and hope that we as a planet will discover that international corporatism is NOT the answer, and will find what IS the answer soon.
I’m flattened that you think our rhubarb stewing and food processor banana cakes constitute haute cuisine. (I think Leah’s baking is the pinnacle.) But I agree it’s odd to have the first words out of a co-worker’s mouth “Hey, I braised those lamb shanks with dried apricots and prunes last night and it was really good.” “Yeah, and I tried that carrot pasta cooked risotto style recipe from Saveur and it was excellent.” “Anyone want some Meyers lemons?” I’m so happy that there are others in our midst who think about the joy of eating and cooking.

somewhat PRETENTIOUS sometimes.
There’s nothing wrong with being honest when it’s not hurtful. I think that if you’re not aware that something can be construed as pretentious (or whatever), it’s good to be informed.
