Why, one might innocently ask, were one so inclined, has the US not jumped all over North Korea’s recent assertion that it has indeed been actively pursuing a WMD (weapons of mass destruction) policy, in direct violation of the non-proliferation treaty that it signed? Considering that North Korea was condemned as being a member of the ‘Axis of Evil’?

Perhaps it is because North Korea has taken several steps towards reconcilliation with South Korea and Japan in recent months? Perhaps it because Japan, spearheading talks with North Korea, is handling that particular situation?

Perhaps it is because Japan & South Korea are within range of North Korea’s missiles, and that would be a terrible, terrible blow, while no one the US really cares about, except Israel, is within missile range of Iraq, and we all know that Israel can kick some serious ass? Perhaps it is because North Korea is a little bit too much like Vietnam, while Iraq is well, Iraq, and g-darn it, wasn’t Operation Desert Storm a rousing success?

Perhaps it is because all the precious oil is in Iraq, not North Korea? Perhaps the Bush Doctrine was just a ploy to find a reason to attack Iraq?

Perhaps, as suggested by ‘The Daily Show’, you can’t attack a man in glasses?

Perhaps this is a ruse by the 3 leaders of the Axis of Evil to over-extend the US, and the US is calling their bluff? It would be mighty hard for the US to fight large-scale wars in both countries at once, eh?

I could probably continue for hours with multitudes of reasons for the lack of response, both plausible and ridiculous, but I won’t. Instead, I’m offering 2 prizes, each for 1,000,000 shares of Tannock.Net Enterprises. One, for the most ridiculous, conspriacy-theory-driven reason, and one, for the most plausible sounding reason I hear. If no one responds, well, I’ll claim the prizes myself.

  1. The American military is built on the premise that it can sustain two full scale wars for an indefinite period so if George DWI Bush wanted to he could get in a scrap with Iraq and Korea at the same time. A war with Iraq isn’t going to last long anyways – worst case is that it takes them a year to roll into Baghdad (I’m guessing it’s a two month job to get there and six months to clean up).

North Korea is a tougher cookie – they’re are surrounded by people the USA would be loathe to put in danger (Japan, China etc). Bush can’t just roll in and do whatever he wants there – Japan would be none too thrilled by that.

  3. When the States to go into Iraq and overthrow Sadam then there won’t be any leaders terribly upset. People will be upset about the actual invasion, but no one really cares about Sadam himself (and many of the arab leaders would like to see him go anyway). North Korea is a different situation through because of China. What government would you replace it with? China will be none to happy if it is one to their disliking, and yet the US would not be willing to put one in that they liked.

And also, Kim Jong-il didn’t try to kill G.Bush Sr.
