I saw my first real-life Segway the other week. How? Well, just around the corner, at First & Fir, is a rental place that’s just opening. They rent out the machines in 2 hour blocks, one hour training, one hour riding. If you call today (604/734.9280), you can get a free training rental from them, between May 2nd & May 8th.
Apologies for the uncritical advertorial, but it’s a Segway! I’ll be critical once I’ve tried it out, this Sunday.
Dude, those lifestyle photos are too much. The seawall will officially never be safe again.

I saw my first one a couple of weeks ago, in False Creek (around the foot of Oak Street). It was crazy — it looked like an ad, because the guy riding it was by himself, but grinning like a maniac.

Um, are you going to ride your Seguay up the side of the chief?

Hmm, that explains it. I live and work right around there, and I’ve seen them a few blocks away. I don’t get the hype really. Sure, they look like they’d be kinda fun for an hour or so, but definitely not $5000US worth of fun.

I’d agree with that assessment, Dave. But they may well be worth a few bucks for a couple hours’ rental here and there. Although I sadly missed my appointment on Sunday, so I can’t tell you how fun they are. However, having witnessed a near collision at the Granville Island intersection, I think it’s safe to say that no one will ever be safe again….
