For those of you who, like me, work in this industry, this nascent website may prove to be an excellent source of fodder for talking I/A with clients, or simply for your own education.
As it stands now, the site has de facto standards for about a half-dozen elements, culled from a study of some 375 websites, which formed the basis of the author’s Master’s Thesis (which is linked to from the site). There also links to other academic and industry studies about each of the examined elements. Hopefully this site will flourish and grow to include more elements, but the information there is already useful for all of us.
Great find!
I notice that Heidi has just added her completed master’s thesis on de-facto web standards.
Reminds me of a slightly similar project — http://www.welie.com/patterns/index.html — which deals with identifying standard web patterns — i.e. the features and functions that make up typical sites, separated into categories such as music artist site, news site, etc.
