Australian Breasts

Leah and I saw ’21 Grams’ last night (more on that in a later post). Naomi Watts stars in that, and has a nude scene (as does Sean Penn, to be fair). As a warning, this is probably not the most ‘PC’ of posts.

What was most noticeable was that she had some of the largest, pointiest nipples I’ve ever seen, while her breasts are not so large. While discussing this at dinner, Leah came up with a theory about Australian breasts: That while they are smallish, the size of breast is more than compensated for by the size of the nipple. This theory is based on breasts of Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman & Elle MacPherson, who are the only Australian women either of us have seen topless, as best as we could recall. Although, when I was in Australia, I did notice that overall, women seemed to have smaller breasts. Which is probably related to the fact that the vast majority of women looked sportier, or at least in better shape than the vast majority of women here.

So my question to the world is: does this theory hold true? Any known exceptions (or other adherents)? etc.

  1. Not really a comment on the nipple:breast ratio, but I sometimes wonder whether North American women have bigger breasts due to the BGH in American milk. Totally random thought.

  3. That’s been “proven” to be true in many studies, though of course there are others that disprove it. It’s also hormones in chicken, which in many cases are actually worse than those in milk (although with milk you have bio-loading). There were some frightening results of girls in south and central america who were being fed chicken produced with hormones far beyond what even the FDA will allow, that were entering puberty at extremely early ages and showing advanced secondary sex characteristics at alarmingly early ages.

I’ve had the same passing thoughts as Steve, and often tied it to food, while I don’t know much of the Australian diet, I know that in many parts of europe for example, where hormone use in factory farming is much more heavily regulated, and the relationship to meat is not necessarily more removed than in the US, but certainly different (portion sizes, frequency and types of meat consumed, etc). that one can easily make generalizations about the different body types.
