Headphones

I think I’m in the market for a new pair of headphones. I currently have an old pair of Sony DJ earphones (MDR-V500) which have serviced me very well. They have crisp mid- & high-range sound, at the expense of slighly flattened bass tones. They are excellent at blocking out external noise (which makes sense, if they’re for DJs). However, they don’t quite fully enclose my ears: the tops of my ears get squished against my head by the pads surrounding the speaker. This wouldn’t be so bad except that I bought new glasses to wear while working and now I’m starting to get really sore ear-tips after a few hours of listening to music at work.

So I’m looking for a good set of headphones that will cover my ears, rather than squish them. Ideally, they’d be wireless, but the only ones of quality I’ve seen were in the $5-800 range, which is definitely too rich for my blood. Lightweight would be a good attribute too. If anyone has any recommendations, I’d be much obliged.

  1. sony’s mdr-7506s are perfect. for under $200 as well, plus they fold up so they’re slightly more portable.

great sound quality and ambient noise reduction too – especially for recording. if you want, we can grab a beer next week and you can check them out on my/your ipod. (can’t remember if you’ve got one).

  3. i have a lower-end sony that i’m quite happy with: MDR-CD280. they’re pretty chunky (not folding), but they’re light, the ambient noise reduction thing is really good, and something like 50 bucks.

  5. You remember those ones i had at the old office? Sennheisers, I think (sorry, they’re on Bowen and I’m not right now). Anyway, I got them up at The Sound Room, and they have great sound, are very light and have cushy foam all the way around your ears (so don’t squish). They also have a long cord with a jack/release on the phones end — designed for when you forget you have them on and you step on the cord or walk away and they just unplug instead of ripping off your head. Downside: they’re not so sound-proof, so if you listen to your music loud, others can hear it.

If you’re really interested, email me and I’ll check what make/model they are tomorrow.
