Dreams about Flying

Do you have flying dreams? Day, Ted and I were talking about them last night, and we all have them. While for each of us, we dream essentially the same dream every time, the nature of each of our dreams is vastly different.

Ted, if I recall correctly, when flying in his dreams, is usually in some sort of archaic/futuristic device with large bolts, and the machine is often in some state of disrepair.

Day, on the other hand, appears to be locked into some sort of elevator-type thing – when he flies, it’s only straight up or down. An additional interesting fact is that there are always power lines above him, even when he’s 100s of metres up in the air.

When I dream about flying, it’s more like the Silver Surfer. I’m wearing some sort of high-tech body suit that somehow makes use of every muscle in my body to power this flying surfboard. It’s incredibly tiring and stressful to have every muscle in your body worked at once. Normally when I have this dreams, I wake up tense, exhausted, sore and quite often, drenched in sweat, as if I really have been working every muscle in my body.

Do you have flying dreams? What are yours like? Do you have any interpretation for any of our dreams?

  1. Mine are more like “air swimming” so much so that I in fact think of them as more like floating dreams and when asked recently if I had flying dreams I said no. Mine also seem to be kinda out-of-body-ish as I often can see myself below but have this keen ability to just kind of breast stroke up above things and hover/float.

  3. Bahhh, real men don’t have flying dreams, we have dreams where you spend the entire time trying in desperation to save your family & friends from getting killed only to be awoken by having yourself shot in the head OR instead you can always wake up after killing one or thousands of people. Those are dreams of men.

  5. I had a strange flying dream last week actually – I was on the roof top of a five or six story building sitting around a table on lawn chairs with about a half dozen people, one of whom was my sister. On my right side there was the angled roof of another adjacent building, starting at about waist height and angled up to a peak some 20 feet higher. I heard a flop-flop-flopping noise from the direction of the other roof, and saw a hat hopping down the slope of the roof (actually it was two hats, but they were bound together somehow (for whatever reason, they reminded me of mating beetles)). My sister got up and attempted to pick up the hats (which were at the edge of the roof by now), but she got some sort of electric jolt and dropped them. When she looked back at me, her eyes had glazed over, she’d slowed down and she warned me in a zombie-like fashion against picking them up (which I of course ignored). I walked over and took a hat in each hand, at which point I too got some sort of electric shock, heard a deafening rushing in my ears and starting to rise up into the air (quickly, kind of like going up in an air balloon). Due to the electric shocking still going on, I was unable to open my hands (plus I was quite high up at the time and concerned about the fall should I let go of the hats). I looked down to see my family/friends disappear as I rose higher and remember an intense feeling of vertigo.

  7. veeeeery interesting. I’ve never had a flying dream where any apparatus was required or involved – I could just….you know, fly, at will. Kind of like Superman, but without the rigid posture with the arms out front. Usually it will start with me jumping into the air, then WHOOSH, I just keep going, (actually interesting in comparison to Day, I always see the power lines receding as I go up) and from that point I can just zip around wherever, fast, slow, it’s pretty controlled. When I wake up from these dreams I’m usually exhilarated and in pretty good spirits.
Be interesting if anyone has insights as to why the guys seem to need apparatus to fly whereas the girls can fly unassisted. And while dirty-minded analogies are sure to arise (heh) there might be other notions as to why this might be? (True, there’s only 5 examples so far, but it’s appearing to go that way. )

  9. when i dream of flying, it’s less flying and more bounding. i’m free to do whatever i want but i can only stay in the air for a certain about of time. it varries depending on how good my initial bound or jump was. it’s like double jumping in a video game to go higher and higher so it’s like little pushes i have to do in the air. i have several flying dreams and at least 2 of them are recurring. neat topic!

  10. I always have flying dreams. Alway different in style but same theme. I fly to prove to others that I can. i have to take off running and flap my arms like a bird. I hate going too high and I get extremely afraid of power lines. The trick to it is: I have to BELIEVE I can fly. Once I believe, then I am allowed to take off. Once I do, I soar around and around and love the feeling of complete freedom. I fly fast and then slow. I fly over houses and sometimes very close to the ground. I have only taken one passenger on my vivid flights, but typically am by myself. I dream that I fly at least 2 to 3 times a month. I have a very vivid imagination and also believe that I have seen relatives who have died in my dreams. They tell me things that are going to happen (which always have come true in some sense). I believe I have some sort of special perception. The flying dreams are the best. Never a nightmare.
