The world of Durthane is a world of post-apocalyptic survival – High Fantasy style. The world was once ordered, ruled and understood. But that has all fallen part. Small, isolated, walled communities eke out an existence in the face of twin threats: The ravages of ecological collapse & ravaging hordes of husks.
Think of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, think of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, think of Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Drowned Cities as inspiration. The setting is grim, but there’s opportunity for real flights of fantasy: In a world where magic was subsumed into mechanical contraptions, where the gods seemingly abandoned their followers under the yoke of an unrelentingly repressive empire – there are marvels to behold. But these are now ancient marvels. And now, as water recedes, as land opens up, as the gods return and nature shows signs of strength once more, opportunities abound.
